Different Types Of Sports Cleats

Sports cleats have studs at their sole. They provide better grip to the sportsman and prevent slippery movement. At times for defining the cleats, the spikes are defined.

History-

Athletes are wearing cleats since 1500. They began to be used in the United States since 1860 when first time ever metal spikes were used.

Innovations have been made continuously in sports cleats since 1954 when first cleats were designed by Adidas. Later different designs and color came up. These were lighter and the sole was stiff thus providing better grip to the ground.

Types-

Depending upon the sports the various cleats have metal spikes on them. Thus, these metal spikes come in different shape and size. These spikes are made up of steel which provides durability. These metal spikes may even break, but the best part is that they can be easily be replaced.

Another type of cleats may have plastic spikes. These types of cleats vary in shape and size. These are preferred as these plastic spikes are made up elastic material which provides flexibility. Thus, they can tolerate moderate pressure and under heavy pressure, they may bend.

-Why choose metal spikes over plastic spikes?

Cleats incorporated with metal spikes are more preferred as they dig deeper into the ground and hence provide better grip.

-Secondly, these metal spikes do not bend when exposed to heavy weight, whereas the plastic spikes bend easily.

-Metal spike shoes though bit expensive but are better suited for the one who wants cleats which last for long.

Types of cleats-

-Low-cut cleat-

These fit below the ankle. These are lightest sport cleat and provide maximum free movement of the ankle.

-Mid-cut cleat-

These fit at the ankle. These are the most popular ones and used by running back and quarterback players. These provide support to the ankle.

-High-cut cleat-

These fit above the ankle. These provide maximum movement to the sportsman and are often worn by a lineman.

Different casing material-

-Leather cleats-

These are expensive and more durable. Besides this, they provide an appealing look.

-Synthetic cleats-

These are less durable and often not preferred by the sportsman as not as comfortable as leather cleats.

Size of studs-

Half inch studs are more suitable as they are appropriate for providing the desired grip. But on a wet and slippery ground one-inch studs are preferred to provide better grip.

The insole is the part of a cleat that surrounds the base. Few cleats have the molded insole as these provide additional comfort, provide good fitting and cushion effect.

While purchasing the cleats most important thing to be considered is its sole. Sole should be soft and flexible as a flexible sole allows easy movement.
